| The South African knifemaking scene has many different players
and exhibitions that feature at least some knives, including a variety of
'outdoor' and 'sporting' type exhibitions. |
 |
| There are two dedicated knife exhibitions held annually: |
 |
| |
The annual exhibition of the Knifemakers'
Guild of Southern Africa, held in Johannesburg, usually
during September, and |

At the Guild Show, approximately 45 knifemakers exhibit, plus allied crafts
and materials and equipment suppliers. All types of knives are usually on
display, from miniatures to swords, folders to hunters, art daggers to kitchen
utilities. Materials range from hi-tech steels to own forged damascus, micarta
to mammoth ivory, and horn, bone and unique African hardwoods. South African
knifemakers have developed a deserved reputation for quality at international
shows all over the world.
The exhibition runs over two days but is preceded by a 'preview' which is
held on the Friday before the public exhibition on Saturday. This preview is
intended to honor our most loyal supporters and offer the opportunity of
inspecting or acquiring items from the current year's offerings, in a more
leisurely and less crowded atmosphere. The attendance is by invitation, is
limited in numbers, and is extended on merit, to real enthusiasts. Welcome
drinks and snacks are served and a bar service is available. Competition
results are announced and the winning knives may be seen and handled,
providing a good indication of current achievements and guide to the
location of some of the noteworthy items around the hall. This preview
invitation will normally be extended to all foreign visitors. |

Should you wish to attend one of the South African knife shows we would
love to be of assistance to you. Our best advice is to correlate plans and
intentions through the Guild chairman, Andre Thorburn, and to supply names
of knifemakers who you may have met previously. Mention what you would like
to do during your trip, and let us see where we can be of help or offer
advice. It is in our real interest to help make your trip a successful and
memorable experience.
You may wish to visit other South African attractions during your stay.
We do not function as a travel agency but may well be able to put you in
touch with the right instances if we are aware of your intentions. We shall
be pleased to answer further queries you may have. |

This is a private show, open to all knifemakers, regardless
of Guild membership. It is held annually over the Easter weekend in the
coastal resort city of Durban (in the Kwa-Zulu-Natal province).
DEKS has, for the last 20 years, been a valuable nestbed for new knifemaking
talent wishing to test their skills in an open market. The timing and location
of the show lends a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere to proceedings. The bringing
together of seasoned international knifemakers and beginners under one roof
results in a tremendous exchange of knowledge, ideas and raw materials.
The new talent being unearthed each year can also lead to bargains being
found!
The show is held at the Riverside Hotel. |
