Thinus was recognised as a knifemaker within five months at the 2001 Durban Easter Knife Show where he was awarded two first prices, followed by Guild membership within another five months.
Thinus builds fixed blades, folders, knife-sets, does scrimshaw and leather work and co-.presents training courses monthly
Since then, he was celebrated several times and awarded a total of 7 "Certificates of Excellence" for individual knives exhibited at shows as well as the Nick Grabe Trophy for "The Best New Knifemaker" during the Guilds Annual Exhibition in 2002.
